AFRAN Transplant Committee Guidelines – Kidney Transplant in Africa

Public Consultation: AFRAN Guidelines on How to Create and Maintain Kidney Transplant Programs in Africa

The African Association of Nephrology (AFRAN) Transplant Committee is pleased to open a two-month public consultation on its new Guidelines on How to Create and Maintain Kidney Transplant Programs in Africa, from 16 September to 15 November 2026.

Developed under the leadership of the AFRAN Transplant Committee, these Guidelines provide an African-led, practical and context-sensitive framework for establishing and maintaining safe, ethical, equitable and sustainable kidney transplant programs across the continent.

The Guidelines were developed over 18 months by 26 African experts from 17 countries representing all five regions of Africa, through a structured consensus-building process, with additional review by international experts. They address the key requirements for transplant program development, including legal and ethical frameworks, governance, human resources, infrastructure, living and deceased donation, phased implementation, sustainability, quality improvement and monitoring.

The Guidelines aim to translate international principles into realistic pathways adapted to African health systems, resources and contexts, while promoting locally owned programs, regional cooperation and progressive self-reliance.

AFRAN invites nephrologists, transplant professionals, policymakers, institutions, scientific societies and other stakeholders to review the document and provide their comments and suggestions during this consultation period.
